Greg called our meeting to order.
Lance and Laura attended the District Grants Qualification on behalf of the club. Lance reports that the grant process has been improved over past years with a streamlined online application to help clubs move their grants forward. It was a 4 hour training and only those who have had the certification can submit grants for their clubs.
Bill says that the club is in good standing regarding Rotary International and tax filings for our club foundation as the year end approaches.
Steve says the Induction Dinner is set for June 17 at the JA Free Enterprise Center, 6500 Greenwood Plaza Blvd. starting at 6 pm. Steve and Robin will provide tenderloin sliders, and Lance and Lucie will bring their famed Cajun Shrimp. RSVP to Steve. Steve brought Fruit Sale order forms to the meeting and also emailed a digital version to members with current pricing, including 1/2 box prices for the peaches and pears. Members should have all they need to start selling. We decided to set an order deadline for July 15 which we can adjust as the date approaches. Pickup day is Aug 2nd. Also, a decision about the 1/2 order containers; boxes, bags, etc. will need to be made soon.
As we drove to the meeting today, we saw that the Bluff Lake improvement project is underway. There was some conversation about the club making an additional donation to the project. Callie volunteered to investigate with them how we could help.
Greg reviewed this year's club goals as the RY year concludes this month. We are pushing for one more member and a few hundred dollars in RI giving to make our target. Help with either is appreciated!
Monica informed us of the Walmart rewards program. It is similar to the Kroger program except that we can list our club to all Walmart customers as a recipient for their purchase rewards. Stay tuned!
Program - 6/3
Meghan Shay, Executive Director, and Amy Shaw, Director of Development, with Step Denver joined us today to share what the organization is doing for homeless men in Colorado, past and present.
Step was founded by Ray Hayworth and grown by Bob Cote' starting in 1983. Almost 70% of the homeless are men, mostly due to addiction. Almost 95% are unemployed. Step Denver is attempting to turn these statistics around. Their 65 bed facility, and a new one in the Springs, are open to any homeless man who is committed to changing their lives. Step requires residents are drug tested, stay sober, get a job and keep it. As they progress through the program they can graduate from dorm living to shared living space to their own apartment to residential living in a neighborhood. Step Denver takes no federal money, which Meghan explained forces the organization to operate with less revenue but she, her board, and staff can operate without red tape. Step has shown results: They can track the successful living of over 80% of the men who have gone through the program. Find our more about Step Denver at stepdenver.org.
