Greg welcomed Anne Van Etten to our meeting. It was her gift of $5,000 in Karl's name which was matched with a gift from the Fitzsimons Rotary in the same amount to start the Karl Van Etten Legacy Scholarship. (Thanks to Greg and Bill who helped make it happen.) Anne spoke about her life with Karl and his interest in teaching. After his career in international sales, Karl began teaching at the Community College of Aurora, becoming a professor of business and department head before retiring.
Greg announced that he has become a Paul Harris member - and he had the pin to prove it! Congrats Greg.
Membership dues statements are out, so please make your payment. Also, if you're inclined, make a donation to the Rotary Foundation today either by check to Bill or go to the RI website and pay online.
Program - 1/14
Lance and Callie updated us on our club greenhouse project and other ongoing community service efforts. They reported that they are considering a site near Erie and a possible participation with Erie Rotary club. The goal is to make the greenhouse a 365 day, energy sustainable project using geothermal and solar. Lance gave us a brief education in the workings of a small geothermal system and what is required to prepare the site for its assembly and installation.
If a site can be finalized, we discussed having a spring kickoff, possibly on the Epic Day of Service in May. We need to complete the project in this Rotary Year or face returning the funds raised. We set 4/4 as the go/no go date.
Callie also outlined some volunteering opportunities for the club: Sand Creek cleanup, Bluff Lake cleanup, Judi's House, The Food Bank, Denver Rescue Mission and Open Arms Thanksgiving. She would like to schedule a project a month and will create a calendar for our review.
At the last meeting Greg presents Anne Van Etten with a framed letter of appreciation from the first Karl Van Etten Legacy Scholar.
