Greg called our meeting to order.
Nick Silvis is a Rotarian who has moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado and is joining our club. Welcome aboard, Nick!
Membership dues statements are out, so please make your payment. Also, if you're inclined, make a donation to the Rotary Foundation today either by check to Bill or go to the RI website and pay online.
A reminder that the club is hosting the CPBA Happy Hour this week at Cheluna Brewery at Stanley Marketplace, Thursday, 5-7. Michi's is catering the food. All members, please plan to attend and network!
Bill announced that Anne Van Etten's 2nd $5,000 gift to the club will be divided with her blessing: $2,000 to the CCA Endowment in Karl's name and $3,000 to the club's foundation.
Bill also reported club balances: $2,895 in admin., $10,172 in the foundation, and $15,500 for special projects. There was some discussion, given our cash on hand, about funding the balance needed to donate the super trash receptacle for the Sand Creek Greenway.
Reno attended the PETS conference last weekend and briefly reported on the events and activities. He enjoyed attending and meeting fellow presidents.
Steve reported that the Pick'em Brackets are underway with 18 players and 20 brackets totaling $400 in the pot. The club receives $200 and the 1st and 2nd place winners split 66/33 at the meeting on 4/8.
Lance and Callie report that another site, this one at the charter school in the Green Valley Ranch / DIA area, is a good potential for our greenhouse. They are working to try to finalize it for the EDS date, but many details remain. We discussed changing the EDS project to a Greenway clean up if the greenhouse project cannot be firmed up. Stay tuned!
Program - 3/25
Barbara introduced, Chandler Bradley, our scholarship recipient, and medical researcher with CU Anschutz Global Health. He spoke to us about the 2nd year Guatamala Dengue study in which he participated. Dengue fever is one of the most debilitating infectious diseases affecting over 390 million people in the Americas and Asia. Vaccines are expensive and mostly ineffective, and the mosquito borne disease is unique in that subsequent infections in individuals are usually more virulent. Chandler was stationed in the research site in Trifinio where he worked through a backlog of about 900 blood samples of residents to gather statistics on infections and re-infections. The hope is that this research could lead to an effective vaccine.
